Shipwrecks haunt the pages of Henry David Thoreau’s “Cape Cod.” The book opens with Thoreau’s observations of the wreck of the St. John, relates the history of different wrecks, introduces the reader to “wreckers” and expounds on the dangers of the ocean. My name is Don Ferris, and I’ve trained over people to scuba dive on Cape Cod. While doing so, I literally wrote the books on scuba diving on Cape Cod, Exploring The Waters of Cape Cod, Beneath The Waters of Massachusetts Bay and The Anthology Of Cape Cod Shipwrecks.

Thousands of Shipwrecks off Cape Cod So many ships have piled up on the hidden sand bars off the coast between Chatham and Provincetown that those fifty miles of sea have been called an "ocean graveyard" containing an estimated 3, shipwrecks including that of the Whydah Gally, the famed pirate ship of Black Sam Bellamy that went down with over tons of gold, silver, jewels and other Brand: Theodore Parker Burbank. The shacks would provide shelter and supplies to shipwrecked sailors; in fact they’re mentioned in transcendental essayist Thoreau’s book Cape Cod. The 19 shacks that remain there today were mostly built in the s, supposedly using the scraps of shipwrecks that washed up on the beach and parts of the old life-saving station.

Apr 17,  · By ERIC WILLIAMS How do you make the Provincetown breakwater even better? Jam a giant rusting shipwreck up against it! The foot fishing vessel Artemis broke loose from a mooring near MacMillan Pier during a March storm and was dashed upon the rocky ribbon at the far east end of town. Now it’s a dandy tourist attraction! I was out there this morning with a bunch of other wreck geeks. The United Nations estimates that three million shipwrecks litter our ocean floors. Maine can’t boast as many wrecks—if that’s something to boast about—as the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Nova Scotia’s Sable Island, or Cape Cod.
